Buying Fine Jewelry in Lebanon: Karats, Hallmarks, and Trust

Lebanon's jewelry trade is long-established — from the goldsmiths of Bourj Hammoud and downtown Beirut to designer ateliers in Ashrafieh. Pricing on gold and diamonds is competitive regionally, but knowing what to verify protects you.

Gold purity in Lebanon

• 21 karat (875): the most popular for jewelry — Middle-Eastern yellow color, rich but soft.
• 18 karat (750): common for European-style designs, harder, better for stone settings.
• 14 karat (585): harder still, more affordable; less common in Lebanese tradition.
• 22 karat and 24 karat: mostly used for investment pieces (bars, coins).

The hallmark

Reputable Lebanese jewelry carries a hallmark stamp indicating purity. Verify it's present and ask for the invoice to specify gram weight, karat, and any stones. The Lebanese Order of Goldsmiths (Naqabat as-Sayagha) is the historical professional body — most established jewelers are members.

Diamonds and stones

For diamonds above 0.5 carat, insist on a recognized lab certificate (GIA, IGI, HRD). These confirm carat, color, clarity, cut. Without a cert, you're trusting the seller's grading. Colored stones (sapphire, emerald, ruby) should also have certification at value points; lab-grown stones must be clearly disclosed.

Engagement-ring buying

Lebanese tradition often involves both families. Many jewelers offer payment plans and trade-in for upgrades later. Bring photos of styles you like; ask for designs to be made before committing. Sizing rings can be resized; sizing pavé bands often cannot — choose carefully.
