Choosing an Orthopedic Surgeon for Joint Replacement in Lebanon
Hip and knee replacements are among the most successful elective surgeries — when done by a high-volume team in an accredited hospital, with structured rehab. Lebanon has experienced surgeons, but volumes vary widely between centres.
The four predictors of success
- Surgeon volume. Ask how many of your specific procedure they performed last year — 50+ is reasonable for hip/knee.
- Sub-specialty. A surgeon who does mostly arthroscopy is not necessarily a high-volume joint-replacement surgeon, and vice versa.
- Hospital ecosystem. Accredited operating theatre with laminar airflow, dedicated orthopedic ward, in-house anaesthesia capability for spinal blocks.
- Rehab pathway. Same-day mobilization, physiotherapy starting on day 1, written discharge plan.
Implant choice
Reputable surgeons use brand-name implants (Zimmer, Stryker, DePuy, Smith & Nephew) with long-published survivorship data. Ask which exact implant, why, and how long the company has supplied Lebanon — implant lifetime support depends on local distributor stability.
Before surgery
- Pre-habilitation: 4–6 weeks of strengthening the muscles around the joint reduces recovery time.
- Dental clearance (bacteria from oral infections can seed a new implant).
- Stop smoking 4 weeks before to reduce wound and infection risk.
- Optimize BMI and diabetes control.
Cost & coverage in Lebanon
NSSF, MoPH, military funds and most private insurers cover hip and knee replacement with medical justification (radiology, prior conservative trial). Out-of-pocket for top private centres ranges 8,000–18,000 fresh USD all-in. Confirm everything in writing — surgeon, anaesthetist, implant, hospital stay, physiotherapy.
