Getting Around Beirut: Uber, Bolt, Allo Taxi & the Shared 'Service'

Getting Around Beirut: Uber, Bolt, Allo Taxi & the Shared 'Service'

Beirut has the most diverse ride options in the Levant: international apps (Uber since 2014, Bolt, InDrive), traditional dispatch companies like Allo Taxi, the bright red-plate licensed taxis, and the iconic shared "service" running on fixed routes for a flat LBP fare.

Which option, when

  • Service (shared taxi) — cheapest, locals only really. Hail any red-plate car, say "service" plus your destination; the driver decides if it fits his route.
  • Taxi (private) — same red-plate cars but you book the whole car; agree price before getting in. Old-school option for off-app trips.
  • Uber / Bolt — fixed app pricing, GPS tracking, in-app cancel record. Best for tourists, late-night, or when language is a barrier.
  • Allo Taxi / dispatch firms — more expensive than apps but professional, reliable airport pick-ups, and easy to book through reception in a hotel.

Cash is still king

Lebanon's banking realities mean that even when the app accepts cards, drivers often prefer cash. Configure your account to pay in cash to avoid cancellations. Keep small fresh USD bills and some LBP.

Beirut airport rules

  1. Always check the price in the app before getting in — drivers occasionally claim a Bolt economy is "comfort" and doubled price.
  2. If queueing for an official airport taxi, the fare is fixed by zone — ask for the printed list.
  3. For pre-booked airport pick-up at a fixed price, Allo Taxi or a hotel transfer is usually less stressful than navigating arrivals.

Safety basics

Prefer red-plate licensed cars day or night; share trip details from the app with a contact; never get into an unmarked car that approaches you at the airport curb. After accidents in past years, embassies have reminded staff to verify drivers — apply the same caution yourself.
