Lebanon's compact size makes a rental a practical alternative to taxi apps for multi-day stays. A handful of pre-departure checks at the counter saves you from disputes when you return the car.
Documents to have on you
- Driver's license. Visitors should also carry an International Driving Permit.
- Rental contract — paper or PDF on the phone is acceptable at most checkpoints.
- The vehicle's raqam el-sayyara (registration) and valid insurance vignette — the agency should hand these over.
- Passport copy if you are a foreign visitor.
Insurance — read the fine print
- Compulsory third-party (TPL) is always included; comprehensive (CDW) is sold separately.
- Ask the deductible (franchise) — typically USD 300–700 for a standard sedan.
- "Zero deductible" packages usually exclude tires, windscreen and undercarriage. Confirm what's covered.
The hand-over walk-around
- Photograph every panel in daylight, including the roof and wheel rims.
- Note existing scratches on the inspection sheet before signing.
- Confirm the fuel level matches what's written in the contract (most agencies use "full to full").
- Test the lights, wipers, A/C and the spare tyre.
Practicalities
Generators and improvised gas stations are common outside major cities — keep your tank above ¼. If you'll cross into the south or the Bekaa, mention the trip at pickup; some agencies want the destinations on file.
