UPS and Batteries in Lebanon: Sizing, Lithium vs Lead Acid, and Solar Integration
AdvisorLB Team
Since 2020, Lebanon's residential UPS market exploded. What used to be 1–2 kVA boxes for IT now stretches to 10 kVA systems running entire apartments. The big shift is from lead-acid to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
Sizing your inverter/UPS
- List essential loads: lights, fridge, TV, Wi-Fi, pump = 2–3 kW.
- Add AC if needed: 1.5 HP unit = 1.2 kW continuous, 4 kW startup.
- Pick UPS with continuous rating ≥ peak load + 20% margin.
- Pure sine wave output is mandatory for compressors and electronics.
Battery chemistry
- Sealed lead-acid (AGM/GEL): cheap upfront, 3–5 year life, 50% usable depth.
- Tubular lead-acid: robust, 7–10 year life, needs ventilation.
- Lithium iron phosphate (LFP): 10+ year life, 90% usable, 3x weight savings — best long-term value.
Solar integration
- Hybrid inverter combines grid, generator, solar, and battery inputs.
- MPPT charge controller required for solar — sized to panel array.
- Battery capacity in kWh, not just Ah — convert: kWh = Ah × V ÷ 1000.
- Grounding and surge protection are non-negotiable.
Buying tips
- Ask for inverter datasheet, not just brochures.
- Demand BMS (battery management system) for any lithium pack.
- Warranty: 2 years on inverters, 5–10 on lithium batteries.
- Installation by certified electrician — many fires from bad wiring.
