Where to Buy Quality Curtains in Beirut: A Buyer's Guide
Buying curtains in Beirut is a market with three very different pricing tiers, and it pays to understand which you are walking into before you spend.
Tier 1: Neighborhood upholsterer
Cheapest, fastest, lowest quality control. You bring a fabric (or pick from their limited rolls), they sew. Acceptable for a guest room or a rental. Risk: hems unravel, color fades fast, no lining options.
Tier 2: Mid-market fabric shops
Souk al-Tawileh and side streets of Mar Elias have shops that sell fabric by the meter and offer in-house tailoring. Better than Tier 1 but you still play project manager: measuring, fabric, lining, rod, installation — four to five vendors to coordinate.
Tier 3: Curated showrooms
One vendor handles everything — measurement, design consultation, fabric, lining, hardware, installation. Higher price, but no coordination tax and consistent quality. A premium curtain showroom in Beirut like JDesign sits at this tier and is the right call if you want a finished result without micromanaging trades.
How to spot quality before installation
- Hem weight: Quality curtains have weighted hems (lead tape or chain). Hold the bottom — it should have heft.
- Lining: Even sheer curtains benefit from interlining. Ask what is between the face fabric and the lining.
- Stitching: 10-12 stitches per inch, double-stitched at stress points. Cheap curtains skip this.
- Header type: Pinch pleat and goblet headers cost more but hold their shape for years. Rod-pocket headers are entry-level.
- Fabric width: Curtain width should be at least 2× the rod width for proper fullness. 2.5× looks luxurious.
Red flags
- A quote that doesn't itemize fabric, lining, header, rod and installation separately.
- No site visit before ordering.
- "Standard" sizes (your apartment is not standard).
- Cash-only with no written warranty.
What to ask before you sign
Ask for an in-home consultation, an itemized quote, a fabric swatch you can keep for 24 hours, a clear installation date, and a one-year workmanship warranty in writing. Reputable showrooms like JDesign offer all of this as standard.
The hidden cost of cheap
A LBP 5M cheap curtain replaced three times in five years costs more than one LBP 8M curtain that lasts fifteen years. Lebanese homeowners often re-learn this lesson the expensive way. Spend once.
